What Is The Cost of A Safari?
How much does it cost to do take a safari vacation? Thousands of people comb through the internet, each minute looking for information, hoping to find answers to this or similar questions. Everybody knows that research and pre-planning are the keys to successfuly planning of any safari.
We would like to give general guidelines that can hopefully help. Broadly speaking, your lifestyle and taste will affect the costs associated such services as lodging type, hotel room category, mode of transport, choice tour operators, just to mention a few. In other words, a safari can be as cheap or as expensive as one chooses to make it.
Currently (2013) a non-resident should expect to spend between US$140 to US$400 per night for a standard safari in Kenya if there are 2 persons using road transportation during the trip. But this is just a guide. If they are 4 persons, the rate per person gets lower.
Overall, the safari cost may include your arrival airport pick and transfer, lodging, food, park entrance fees, safari transportation, guiding fees and bottled water. Depending on the type of safari you take, there may be additional elements like air tickets, day tours and excursions, etc
Some Of The Variables That Make Up The Cost Of The Safari:
The Season Of Travel (High or Low)
In general, prices are higher during “high seasons” which lasts from June-October in East african safari destinations. Slightly lower prices apply between November and the first 2 weeks of December. The Christmas season, which lasts from December to March sees an increase in prices. Hotels often charge a Christmas, New Year and Easter supplement. The “low season,” which is the rainy, west season is considered the best time to visit Kenya for budget travelers. The low season usually ranges from April 1 and runs until May 31.
Is it A Group Safari or Private Safari?
All inclusive group safaris are much cheaper as they are priced on seat-in bus vehicle basis and the prices tend to be lower. At the end of this article, you will see sample group safaris. On the other hand, exclusive private safaris tend to cost a little bit more.
If It Is A private Safari, What Is The Size Of Your Traveling Unit (Number of Persons)
One way of getting the private safari to cost slightly lower is to get more people. The cost per person is lower as the cost of transportation is spread out to all the other members of the group.
How Many Days Are You Going On Safari?
The longer the safari, the more you will to pay for the transportation, park and guidining fees and accommodation services.
The Safari Parks, Reserves or Conservancies You Are Visiting.
The different parks and reserves charge different prices for the entrance fees. So the choice of your parks and reserves is an important factor of your safari cost.
The Safari Camps And Lodges You Choose To Stay
Safari lodging will cost anything from US$30 to US$2000 per person per night depending on the class or category.
How Will You Travel - by air or by road?
The mode of transport that you choose has a bearing on the cost. Road safaris in Kenya and East africa are cheaper than flight safaris.
The Type And Quality Of Guides and Vehicle Used (Safari Vans vs 4x4)
If you choose to travel by road, then the question of the type of your safari vehicle must be answered. The majority of standard kenya safaris are mostly done using the safari vans. The more exclusive camps and lodges prefer to use the 4WD vehicles that make this a bit more expenseive.
What Is Your Residential Status (Citizen, Resident or Non-resident)
Most hotels and safari lodges and camps have slightly cheaper rates for citizens of that particular destinations. Persons who may not be citizens but reside in that country, such as diplomats, volunteer workers may also get discounted rates. Tourists and visitors pay the highest. A few hotels however have flat rates that apply to all persons.
What Activities Will You Take Part In While On Safari
The nature of activities you plan to do will affect the costs associated especially if you plan to traverse across the country. Extra activities such as balloon rides over the Maasai Mara and Serengeti , entrance fees to cultural villages, bush meals and visits to museums and gratuities are all cost factors in the overal price of your safari.
Cost of International Flights To Your Destination
And finally, your airline ticket into your safari destination from your home country is also a factor in the overall cost of the vacationl. In most cases, this is booked separately. However, tour operators and travel agents can also assist you in making affordable flight reservations with the various airlines that they partner with.
One of the ways to do a low-cost safari is to travel with others as a group, sharing vehicles. These types of safaris are scheduled to take off on specified dates and follow a fixed itinerary. Below are 2 samples of such safaris.
